Indian Penal Code (IPC). It is the main criminal code of India. It is applicable only in India except for the states of Jammu and Kashmir. It is intended to cover all substantial aspects of criminal law. It was drafted on 6th October 1860 but came into force in British India during the early British Raj period in 1862. Macaulay died near the end of 1859, so, he was unable to see his creation coming into force on 1st January 1862. The IPC is sub-divided into 23 chapters comprising 511 sections. The Code contains introduction, explanation, exceptions and covers a wide range of offenses. The Act of IPC came with an objective to provide a general penal code for India.
