Ecological Services – Carbon Fixation

Ecological Services

The plants provides us with the essential services we have a tendency to need for life. These services are called ecological services – the interactions among organisms and their natural environments, including the cycling of water and basic nutrients that humans are able to use and capitalize on. Ecological services include:

Purification of air and water

Mitigation of floods and droughts

Detoxification and decomposition of wastes

Generation and renewal of soil and natural vegetation

Pollination of crops and natural vegetation

Controlling the massive number of potential agricultural pests

Dispersal of seeds and translocation of nutrients

Maintenance of biodiversity

Protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays

Partial stabilization of climate

Moderation of temperature extremes and the force of winds and waves

Support of diverse human culture

Providing artistic beauty and intellectual input which helps in lifting the human spirit.

Ecological goods include clean air and abundant fresh water. All the natural processes, arising from healthy systems that are helpful to the living elements of the ecosystem are referred to as ecological services. Such benefits are available to all living organisms, including animals and plants, rather than to humans alone.

Carbon Fixation

Carbon fixation or carbon assimilation is that the method of conversion of inorganic carbon (carbon dioxide) to organic compounds by living organisms. It is the incorporation of carbon into organic compounds by living organisms, primarily by chemical change in inexperienced plants. The most outstanding example is chemical change. Chemosynthesis(is carbon fixation driven by the chemical reaction of inorganic substances e.g., chemical element gas or chemical element sulfide) is conjointly another variety of carbon fixation and may take place in the absence of sunlight. Organisms that facilitate within the fixing of carbon are referred to as autotrophs. These autotrophs rely on the method of carbon fixation for his or her own growth. Heterotrophs are organisms that depend upon autotrophs for their growth. The organic compounds produced by autotrophs are used by heterotrophs to produce energy and to build body structures.

Carbon fixation by green plantsTrees and inexperienced plants are essential for the removal of carbon coming into the atmosphere by changing inorganic carbon into organic compounds with the discharge of oxygen. The main chemical flow between forest and atmosphere is that the exchange of carbon dioxide and O2.
