Conjunctions: Definition and Types

Conjunctions are word that binds together two sentences phrases or clauses. They act as a bridge between two sentences or phrases or word to connect them and make them perfect. Conjunction indicate a certain relation between two sentences by joining them.

And, or, but, because, either, although, neither, nor etc. are the best suitable examples of conjunction words.

Conjunctions are so compulsory that without it you cannot join two phrases or sentences properly.

 

There are three major classifications of conjunction

  • Coordinating conjunctions
  • Subordinating Conjunctions
  • Correlative Conjunction

 

Coordinating conjunctions:

This is perhaps the most common type of conjunction words. These are the words used to join two sentences, phrases, or group of words together that have similar grammatical structure. These conjunction words are not used mostly in the starting or end of the sentence.

Best suitable examples of coordinating conjunction are And, or, but, because etc.

I would like to eat macaroni and fries in the lunch

In the above stated example the underlined ‘and’ is connecting words macaroni and fries together

We can play at the ground or at my home as well

In the above stated example, “or” is connecting two phrases at the ground and at my home together.

I went to say him sorry but he refused to accept my apologies

In the above given example, but is connecting two sentences or clauses together.

 

Subordinating Conjunctions

There are two types of sentences the one is independent clause, it is a complete sentence with complete meaning, another is dependent clause, it is an incomplete sentence with the meaning depends on independent clause.

Subordinate conjunction is a word that joins independent clause or main clause with the dependent clause or subordinate clause.

While, whenever, as soon, when, because, are best suitable examples.

We were watching TV, while you were outside.

Because you are ill, I gave your absent application.

In the above stated examples two different clauses are connected by giving the sentences a complete meaning

 

Correlative Conjunction

These are the word used to compare two phrases having reciprocal relation. These are used as a pair word.

Either-or, neither-nor, not only-also are best suitable examples.

I would either go to Maldives or Singapore for vacations

The weather is pleasant as it is neither too cold nor hot.

In the above examples you can see that the pair of conjunction words are used to compare the correlation between two phrases or words.
